We are the music-makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.” This is the beginning of a famous poem entitled “Ode” by Arthur O’Shaughnessy. This line was also quoted in the well-known 1971 movie, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” This line is one that has made an impact on my life for many years. It has shaped the way that I not only look at life, but also my actions with how I confront the different challenges life throws before me. There are many things we can learn from this short line of profound wisdom. I believe that we are the masters of our own destiny. We control most of our life situations, and for those we cannot, the thing we can control is our reaction to that situation.
Music is a force that is stimulating to our aural senses. Music is a universal language that, in one dialect or another, brings joy and pleasure to everyone. One dialect that may be pleasing to many may be the warm melodious tones and melodies of a cornet, while another may be the angelic timbre of a Celtic harp. No matter the culture, one thing is for certain. Music is a powerful language, one we can all relate to, and something that we make because of the pleasure it brings. We are the music-makers.
Our dreams are those things for which we have a great desire and want. Our dreams can be something tangible such as a house or family, and our dreams can also be something abstract such as a new look on life, or a certain attitude towards a person or thing. We are the ones who make up our dreams, and are the ones who make our desires and wants, real. We are the dreamers of dreams.
The things that we want in life are the things that we must work to obtain. If we are the makers of music, then it means it is our responsibility to write the not only the melodies, but also the harmonies and the rhythms to our music. If our composition turns out to have been written in the wrong key, or has poor harmonies, and unintended dissonance then we have no one to blame but ourselves. We are the makers of music.
If we desire for our dreams to come true, then we must work hard to achieve those dreams. If the dreams are ours, then it is our responsibility to ensure that those dreams are followed and the goals met. If our dreams turn into nightmares, and we are having trouble escaping the boogey man that is chasing us, then we need to realize that these dreams are ours, and we are the ones in control. Instead of us being the ones that are chased, we need to turn it around and make our dreams the thing that is being chased. We are the dreamers of dreams.
I believe that we are responsible for the consequences in our lives, whether good or bad. If we write a composition with a few bad chords in it, we need to take responsibility for our actions and realize that we are the ones composing this piece of music that is our lives, and make the necessary corrections. If we realize that our dreams have become a nightmare for us, we need to remember that we are the ones in control of the dream, and we need to take charge and change the direction of those dreams. We are the masters of our own destiny. It is our responsibility to make sure we compose our music and reach our dreams. We are the music-makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.
